Some information on Woven-Wood Shades

Woven wood shades, a contemporary version of the 1960’s style bamboo blinds, are one of the most popular window treatments today, NH woven wood shadesWoven-wood shades are making headlines for a number of reasons. The foremost being the “green” factor. The shades are made from natural reeds, grasses, and woods that provide rich coloring and textural details found in many styles from rollout to classic fold up designs. They are manufactured by hand or machine. Woven woods can be found in light translucent forms when made from delicate reeds and grasses. When Rattan, Bamboo and other wood shafts are woven together, The colors are bolder, and more light can be blocked. For true darkness, black out lining can be added. A matching valance can add a finishing touch along the top edge while hiding the listing mechanisms you might glimpse through a loosely woven shade

How wide can a shade be?

Woven-wood shades of up to 220 inches wide can be made to work comfortably. Wider shades work best when made from lightweight grasses, since you will be pulling the bulk up and down each time you operate the shade. One wide expanse of shade provides a cohesive, neat look across multiple windows. However, if you’re concerned about the weight of one large shade, placing several across a wide window is another option. If there’s enough room for mounting within a window frame,  individual shades can be installed there as well or, two or three shades can be installed side by side on the same head rail with a matching valance positioned across all. For shades over 72 inches wide, use a continuous loop-lifting system that provides a child-safe cord attached to the window frame

Motorizing window shades

One of the biggest developments in window treatments, especially in the shade and blind industry, is the use of motorization. With the click of a remote, or the flick of a  wall switch, you can lift, tilt and lower all of the shades in one room or an entire house. Woven-wood shades as well as cellular and pleated shades, roller shades, micro blinds, and wood or sheer horizontal blinds up to 2 inches wide can be motorized. It’s a great option for oversize shades and blinds that are heavy to operate by hand. Ask us about Hunter Douglas’ Powerview motorization options.
